Veganism: A better lifestyle, a better future

By: Isabela Castillo 10°A

Everyone loves meat. Barbecue ribs, nuggets, sausages, pork belly, chicken wings, etc. But, would we still love it if we know what is behind it? Nowadays, people love to have a fit lifestyle and ironically meat is always an essential factor of the “vigorous” diets. Yet, because of the industry, consumers do not actually know the truth behind these delicious meals. Contrary to many beliefs, there are a lot of bad and preoccupying consequences for eating meat. However, do not be scared. There is a lifestyle that you can follow in order to prevent all these things: it is known as veganism. Veganism is a way of living in which you give up all the food that comes from animals of your diet and replace it for a plant-based one. Also, you reject any products that involve animal cruelty and abuse. But, why? Well, there are more reasons than just the safety of those beautiful and innocent animals.

Even though there is a popular belief that makes people think that veganism makes you weak and malnourished, both the British Dietetic Association and The American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics have agreed that well structured vegan diets could have a beneficial impact in various aspects in the health of anyone no matter their age or stage of life. In addition, many studies have proven that having a vegan lifestyle will prevent you from aching heart diseases, type II diabetes, and high blood pleasure and cholesterol.

Another reason for having a vegan lifestyle is the environment. Due to the livestock and dairy industries, our planet is struggling to survive more and more. These industries spend exorbitant amounts of water in order to raise cattle. As well, the grains that will feed the animals in mass production cause deforestation, habitat loss and species extinction. If we help our planet, we are helping ourselves.

As the most obvious argument to stop animal products, it is crucial to talk about animals’ welfare. Media likes to make us believe that animals in farms have a nice and comfortable life before they are killed. However, this is not true at all. Just like us, animals have a fear of dying and the conditions in which they are raised are not the best. They must bear a limited, filthy space which produces stress and is not suited as a worthy way of living. Moreover, their life expectancy is worryingly reduced by the massive production that the world "needs". For example, in the production of dairy products many male calves are murdered because they do not represent any importance to the farmers. Also, in the egg industry male chickens are killed when they are just a day old for the same exact reason. The real cow life expectancy is about 20 to 25 years old and the chicken life expectancy is about 7 to 8 years old.

Now that you know the truth behind the livestock, dairy and egg industries and the detrimental impacts it may have to your health, do you really think that the pleasure of savoring a nugget justifies all of these? You can change the world with little action, and veganism is one of the most attractive ones. You can be the change you wish to see in the world.
