Divergent

By: Mariana Torres 10°A

"We have all started to put down the virtues of the other factions in the process of bolstering our own. I don't want to do that. I want to be brave, and selfless, and smart, and kind, and honest. "He clears his throat" I continually struggle with kindness. Veronica Roth.

I am going to talk about a book I read and showed me how future society will be like; it’s terrifying to imagine myself living in that place they showed. The book is called “Divergent”. Veronica Roth is the author, it was published the 26 of April in 2011 and the book has only 487 pages. The genre of this book is science fiction, dystopia, and young adult fiction. The main character is Tris; a divergent, intelligent, brave and unique 16-year-old girl. Also Four, who is Tris's companion throughout the whole story and as Tris, he chooses to go to Dauntless because he can't live the life he had to. The book is mainly about a dystopian society, where people are divided into 5 different factions based on human virtues. First dauntless (the brave) the second Amity (the kind) the third one Erudite (the intelligent) the fourth one Abnegation (the selfless) and the last one Candor (the honest). After I read the book I rate it with 5 stars over 5, so for this, I recommend this book because of several reasons, especially because it left me many teachings for taking into account.

The first one is that it may be so helpful so that people are warm about what can happen in the future of our society if we continue doing the things we are used to, so probably we all can open our eyes and think twice when doing things that are supposed to help us grow as a world. My second reason is that in the book they showed a world in which people have trouble in terms of identity, because maybe they don't fit in the world but there's nothing to do with it, just because there's already a mold made by other people. Nowadays we are living in a society where there are already some ideas that we have to follow in order to be accepted by others, sometimes we are forced to change who we are and that needs to stop. On the other hand, fear is presented as a way to hide from the world’s real problems, and Tris was someone who believes in being brave and extraordinary for facing the fears. And this in our actual society is so important because most of the people are afraid of doing things maybe because of what people can say or because what can happen in the future, but as Tris said, we must face our fears for doing great things and not stop achieving our goals. Moreover, power in both societies is seen as people making other people do whatever they want to, it's a kind of manipulative power that controls everything, especially people's minds so that everyone follows the same ideologies.

Finally, the last reason why I said is important to read this book is because of the society and how it works. In divergent, the society is divided into factions that decided everything about people's lives; their jobs, whom they marry, what they wear, where they live among other things, but this is not an efficient method because it is the key to start chaos and end up with the identities. In our society, something similar is happening. We are divided into countries and follow different ideologies depending on where we belong. Also, wars along the years have happened and people have created boundaries with others that don't belong to the same place. In conclusion, I can say this book is very interesting and you should read it for what I mentioned before. All of what I said are some ideas that compare both societies and show that the dystopian society the author is trying to create is not that far away.
