Teachers are fun, and that's a fact

As students, we interact with a lot of people during our time in school, but the people with whom we spend most of our time are teachers. Sadly, most of us don’t know much about them besides a few details about their life. But most of them have a pretty interesting life and I wanted to investigate it. I went around the school asking teachers to tell me fun or interesting facts about their lives and you won’t believe how amazing they are. If you think we have boring teachers, then read this article and think again.

I think at least 90 percent of the girls in high school have had English class with Adriana Sarmiento, but most of us don’t really know her. Did you know that she was really sportive? She used to practice volleyball, baseball, AND tennis. On the other hand, there is a teacher that likes a sport but it is not one that involves hitting a ball, Clemencia Medrano. Besides being an avid reader, she loves to ride the bicycle, I wonder, when are we going to see here next to Nairo Quintana competing? There is also another teacher who used to practice a sport, but a more “radical” one. Alvaro Herrera used to skateboard. Impressive, right? But there are two teachers who used to be more than just good in a sport. Diana Camargo got into a competitive swimming level, and Arthur Brett Webster almost became a professional lacrosse player. I bet nobody saw that coming. Another thing that, at least I didn’t see coming, was that Ana María Paez, who is an incredible math teacher, used to be very bad in that same class. But wait, there is more about her. She married the same person TWICE, and her first marriage was at the age of sixteen. Another teacher that used to be very different when she was young was Nancy Espita. She escaped school when she was seven years old. Another rebel, just like young Nancy, is Mauricio Campuzano. He also escaped school, but he did it to play video games, besides he had to go back to school before it was over, and to do it he had to jump the gate. Sadly, and to no one’s surprise, he was caught and suspended for three days. Moreover, you would never guess what happened to Yolm Cruz when he was young… he failed sixth grade, along with his brother. But after that, they decided to study hard and they ended up being the first and second in their grade. Besides being very intelligent, Yolm is also very talented. He wrote an article for “El Espectador”, and he knows how to play guitar. And I bet you would never guess which teacher has artistic talent.  Mariana Sarmiento. Yes, she used to play the Bandola. Who wouldn’t want to hear Marianita play little drummer boy? I certainly would love that. Interestingly, music is one of many teachers' favorite hobbies, for example, Nora Palacios played the violin when she was young. Continuing the topic of music, there is a teacher that loves to dance. Can you guess who? I’ll give you a hint, she is an angel. You probably guessed correctly, she is Angela Mancipe. Besides loving God and being a devout Catholic, Angelita really likes dancing, especially salsa. To close the “Music section” on a high note, we have Juan Ramón Gonzalez, who composes music. This is impressive; however, he has a secret fear. He is scared of heights and he escaped the airport in Cartagena just because he was afraid to fly.

On another note, you may not know it but we have two actors among our teachers. Yes, Noel Rodriguez may know how to speak three languages, but you would have never guessed that he was in a television series. He was an Acolyte in “Los Pecados de Inés Hinojosa”. And if you’re wondering who the other actor is, he is Wadi Jaimed! He was going to become an actor but when he realized that the show world wasn’t what he had pictured, he quit. But now he is an amazing philosophy teacher and a great “Tamale” Maker. And he is not the only one that cooks, Noel is quite a Chef, and Maria Liliana Soto loves to cook and is a great pastry maker. And to end this long list of fun facts I chose none other than the director of “The Scoop”, Edward Moore. He is an amazing guy with lots of things to tell. As many may know he loves rock and roll, but did you know that when he was young he used to have really long hair, just like Robert planet from Led Zeppelin? Or that he always dreamed about being a guitarist? He is really religious and a strong believer in “El Divino Niño”, but he is also incredibly open-minded. Furthermore, he is crazy about sports. He and Arthur are gym buddies, they go at least 4 times per week. He is a very good ultimate player, and when he was 15 years old he became a tennis champion in Colombia. And finally, this is not much of a fun fact but I think that he and many people have in common is that he loves “Corrientazos.”

Maybe, before reading this, you thought teachers lead boring lives, just grading papers, planning lessons and designing evaluations that will make us suffer. But now you know that teachers do many things with their time, not only their jobs. They are people like us, with talents, passions, and secrets. Some are reckless and spontaneous while others are calmer, but you could never say that they are boring. I’m sure there are many other teachers that have fun facts so incredible that they could knock you out of your chairs, but that’s your job to discover. So if you ever feel bored just talk to a teacher, they will probably have tons of stories to tell.
