A Parisian Happily Ever After

By: Juliana Alzate 10°A

For every little girl, all the bedtime stories began with a “Once upon a time…” and ended with “…and they lived happily ever after.” Growing up our parents told all of us those classical fairytales in which prince charming always defeated the evil witch and rescued the princess. Also, our dads never stopped treating us as their princesses. We all are waiting for our prince to come and although we may be big girls, who affirm are not babies anymore, deep down we all know we still believe that there is someone out there for us. There is no point in denying that every time we see a couple pictures on Instagram, VSCO, Pinterest etc…, we think even for a split of a second about our prince charming and what it would feel like to be with that person. Even though the struggle is real, we still find some comfort in other things, such as books.

Since last year romcoms have become a thing not only on Netflix but also in literature. I personally love a good love story, the kind of story that gives you a severe heartache and really gets to you. So after I had nothing left to read I bought two books from the American author Stephanie Perkins. These were recommended by a friend of mine so I decided to give it a chance. The books are called “Anna and the french kiss” and “Isla and the happily ever after”, both books are set in the city of love, Paris, and follow the stories of two girls and their adventures on their way of finding true love. For instance “Anna and the french kiss” plot is about this girl, Anna, who is the new student in a boarding school in Paris for American kids. Here Anna would not only have to face the challenge of adapting to her new life but also she will have to deal with the fact that she has fallen for her new best friend, Éttiene St.Clair, who is one of the most handsome guys in the school. This book is the Parisian romance you have been waiting for, it is full of these lovely and special moments that you can imagine the fireworks between the characters.

Different from “Anna and the french kiss”, “Isla and the happily ever after” is a half New York and half Parisian romance that represents better the modern day fairytale. The story follows Isla Martin who is this shy, tiny and smart girl that has always had a crush on the school’s most cute guy, Josh. But not everything will be sunshine and butterflies, as the story goes on the time of making life-changing decisions, like college, will put up to the test Isla and Josh’s relationship. It is the classic love story of the shy girl and the bad boy; however, this book presents this cliché in the most lovely way since it really captures the feeling of those insecure girls who are in love. The way the novel crosses the characters paths and how they interact with each other just gives the exact amount of heartache throughout the whole book. The book is simply amazing, it has a touch of reality mixed with the perfect quantity of magic, dreams, and wishes.

I really encourage you to read these books if you are the kind of girl who just loves the novels that make your heart race and your stomach feel like it was full of butterflies. These books are special, not only because of their plots but also because reading them would make you believe in fairytales again and leave aside the assumption that they are just for little kids. They would make you understand that every one of us has their happily ever after waiting for them and the best part of it is that it will be a surprise that you will never see it coming. Until then just remember that one day you will have your happy ending and never doubt of it.
